The Moves of the EFT Tango do not always proceed one after the other. Often there will be repetitions and diversions. A request for an enactment will precede rather than follow the exploration and deepening of emotion. The therapist will ask an evocative question to elicit processing of an enactment and then answer the question herself. Just like Argentinian Tango, the Moves have many variations and arrangements. Watch ten minutes (minutes 38 to 48 in a 90 minute session) of Lorrie working with P and L where she goes through all five moves four times. You may want to follow along with the transcript pdf as you watch, because you’ll be working with that transcript to do your “final exam”.
Match the Moves with the Transcript
To complete this exercise, open the two PDF’s and read them through. You may wish to print them out for use as worksheets. Your task is to take the line numbers on the transcript and match them with the symbols in the Guide, then write out your answers in the Quiz Box for each page. For example, the first (1) for EFT Tango Move 1 is matched with line numbers 30, 31, and 32 in the transcript, where Lorrie says “…So— you know what, Phil it’s almost like you’re shrinking away here. Do you feel like you’re losing him? Do you feel like you’re kind of getting further away? Like we’re kind of losing you…” So you would write “(1) 30-33” in the first Quiz Box followed by “(2) XX-XX” when you decide which lines show Lorrie doing ETM 2: explore/deepen emotion. Once you have finished matching the Moves listed in the Guide with the transcript and completed the Quiz Boxes, then you can look at the Answer Key and see whether you agree with our selections. (Yes, this is an open computer “exam”.) If you have different selections than ours, that’s fine because it will illustrate that these Moves, like any good tool, can be used in different ways and seen in different ways. Our hope is to show you how the Moves flow together and overlap each other.
